About shatter
Shatter is a cannabis extract. The plant material is washed with a solvent, the solvent is purged off, and what is left is cannabinoid and terpene without the flower around it. Cooled flat, it sets clear and brittle — that sheet, and the way it snaps, is where the name comes from. Texture is a clue to handling rather than to quality: a slab that has gone soft or sugary has usually warmed up at some point, which changes how it looks far more than what it is.
The difference between shatter and live resin is when the plant was frozen. Shatter starts from dried and cured material. Live resin starts from plants frozen right after harvest, which keeps more of the smell and taste, so it stays soft and is usually much more fragrant. Both are concentrates, made from the same plant at different points in its handling.
Concentrate is far stronger by weight than flower, and the THC figures on this page say so plainly. If you have only ever smoked flower, a single gram goes a long way. The amount people use at a time is measured in fractions of a gram rather than in bowls.
